School Kids

We were hired by a major publishing company to come up with four junior high kids for a quick presentation. I believe it's safe to post these now. Here are the girls--I'll post the boy characters next week.

This was my first true project utilizing my new Cintiq for the sketches and PSD touch-ups. The art director made slight alterations to the sketches. She wanted the girls to look older and more hip. Typically, we're told not to go into this realm when it comes to kids products. Also, the poses were switched. But for the most part, you can see that our designs translated to the final 3D character. We had one week to get the four characters done. There were no changes on our first round of 3D and everyone was ecstatic.

Sketch Pad 06

Super Hero Girl
Wahooo! This is our 100th posting on this damn blog! I'm fairly certain that our mom isn't the only person out there reading this thing--so, I'd like to say "thanks" to the small group of followers!

I came across these sketches on the back-up server. This character design never made it through to 3D. You can see all the variations we went through--the larger images are the finals. I've been doing quite a bit more sketching these days--so, keep an eye out for more 'Sketch Pads'.

Creative Biz Note #23

The Con Artist

I decided to write about a mistake we made awhile back. Not to whine...but to share.

The phone call was somewhat skeptical at first. My gut feeling was to walk away. It was an entrepreneur with a supposed small company backing his endeavors. This seemed odd to me. I checked backgrounds on the client and the manufacturing company and there had been some healthy production in the past--which meant money. But most entrepreneurs talk big about their projects--as though it's the next "Harry Potter"! Overall, if words such as,"I really want to work with you guys (sweet talk)..involving you in ALL the future projects"--run like hell!! I've read many times before about staying away from clients with all kinds of promises. Honestly, how could a client even have that kind of control--they don't. The client may be ignorant to the fact that the investors/manufacturer will have a say in the process.

Art in LogoLounge Book

It's finally arrived!...one of my logo marks appears in the new Logolounge Master Library: 3000 Animal & Mythology Logos. It's a simple thing--yet kewl. A software company was in need of a logo for their mobile device video game.  http://www.quaysidepublishinggroup.com/
